Key things to focus on when choosing a WordPress theme

Design and User Experience

Certainly, your reason for choosing a particular theme is to make sure your website looks stunning and your brand is displayed in the best light possible. You can find a theme that suits your business by following a series of steps.

To start, look for the sites where the best designed themes are sold. Although this may seem obvious, I think it is worth mentioning. My personal favorite is Theme Forest, but there are plenty of great designs available from Elegant Themes and Studio Press as well.

Then take some time to explore the demo. See if the website seems easy to use. Do you have enough white space? Does it feel exciting or does it give you a headache? Your gut instinct plays a vital role in the decisions you make.

Lastly, choose a cross-browser compatible theme, which is also built to be accessible.

Sensitivity

Mobile traffic differs from industry to industry, but many reports have agreed that on average 30% of people use their mobile phones and tablets to visit websites. Whether this is true or not, there are more than enough reasons to use a responsive theme.

Almost all reputable themes are mobile-friendly, so when a theme lacks responsiveness, this is cause for concern. Many theme vendors allow you to filter unresponsive themes. An additional option is to browse a list of curated and responsive themes. One of the effective ways to tell if a responsive theme is good enough is to try running the demo through Google’s latest mobile optimization tool.

SEO

When WordPress is equipped with any of several excellent SEO plugins, it could be among the most SEO-friendly CMS available. However, many themes make all sorts of on-site SEO mistakes, like skipping header and alt tags, duplicating content, and making dynamic URL mistakes.

When choosing a theme, choose one that mentions “SEO Ready” or “SEO Optimized” in its description, but don’t just rely on it. Many developers add this to be able to sell their theme. When you know that a designer has at least taken SEO into account when developing their theme, you gain some kind of security.

You can install an extension like SEO Site Tools or Mozbar for the Chrome browser to do some quick SEO checks on a theme demo.

easy to customize

Several themes come standard with a customization panel. This way, you don’t have to make direct changes to the style sheets. Plus, plugins like the Visual Page Editor make it easy to create complicated page structures without having to touch code. Several of these WYSIWYG editors are quite limiting, but in general, I find them very advantageous in making a website look impressive without exerting much effort. If a developer admin panel demo is available, I suggest you try it out so you can customize the things you need.
