The Lost Heart of the Ocean: The Marxist Critique

“Near, farwhere you are” is a song performed by Celine Dion that mourned many people and remembers the death of Jack and many passengers on the Titanic. This line vividly represents how far or where Jack and the people who died on the Titanic will still be remembered. Titanic is a film written and directed by James Cameron that tells about the harrowing story of the sinking of the Titanic. It was released in the year 1997 and is still famous today. The distance of unfair treatment between the “powerful” and the poor, and how your social class affects the way you live your life are some of the themes that are affirmed in the film.

The movie opens with a guy named Jack playing in a game of poker and the Titanic tickets are in the jackpot. Jack wins the game with a full house, so he and his friend Fabrizio have to hurry to make it on time to get on the board. it also shows first class passenger Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslett), her mother Ruth (Frances Fisher) and her fiancé Cal Hockley. Rose is on her way to Philadelphia to marry Cal, an arrangement made by her mother to protect her wealth status. Then Rose tries to commit suicide by throwing herself off the Titanic. She confronts Dawson, who talks her off the railing. They fell in love pretty quickly when Rose was threatening to jump off the Titanic because of problems in her life. Jack helped her off the ledge and saved her from it. Rose was already engaged to Caledon Hockley, who was a rich and ignorant man. Jack and Rose continued to see each other on the boat even though Rose’s mother (Ruth) disagreed and she was a rich snob like Rose’s fiancé. One night, while they were partying in the lower levels of the ship, the Titanic collided with a large iceberg which they could not avoid as it was much larger underwater than it appeared on the surface. That’s when the Titanic started sinking so fast. All the women and children were asked to board small boats, while the men and some of the less fortunate poor people were locked down on the ground floor. Rose and Jack go down with the boat and Jack helps her up to a door that can support the weight of a person. While Jack is in the freezing water, they exchange words of love, and Jack dies of hypothermia. Once aboard the Carpathia, Rose gives her name as Rose Dawson. She saw Cal once more searching frantically for her, but she hides her face in a blanket just as he glances in her direction. Rose then proceeds to do everything she and Jack promised to do together, and she lives her life. Back on Lovett’s ship, Rose walks to the side, pulls out the Heart of the Ocean and throws it overboard. In the last scene, Rose meets Jack on the Titanic’s grand staircase, they kiss and are applauded by those lost in the disaster.

As it turns out, the Swedish guys who lost the poker game ended up making a living. and Jack’s dream of being a billionaire will now remain just a dream and like the Titanic called The Ship of Dreams, it sank deep under water. And he sunk many dreams and took many lives of many people who had the dream of having a better life their destiny, but then he ended his life just like that. You truly cannot predict life when it is about to end. Like the song about to end “And my heart will go on and on” Jack and the many people who died on the ship will always be remembered.

Titanic is really a heartbreaking movie and it really captures many people’s hearts and is still popular today. This story exposes things in the world like unfair trials, discrimination and mistreatment of the poor. Titanic is a form of film that enlightens our minds to see what is happening around us according to the state of your life you will be judged and treated. Truly Jack’s love is so amazing that it leads him to sacrifice his own life just to save her. It’s a really great movie and it really shows how people treat people based on their status in life.
