Star Trek Halloween Costume Ideas for Trekies

There is no denying that Star Trek has a gigantic following. Since the series began with the interstellar adventures of Captain James T. Kirk in 1966, to the present moment, Star Trek is absolutely stellar. That’s why you will never go wrong with Star Trek Halloween costumes this year. And with the 2009 release of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek movie, you’re set to be an astronomical hit! Whether you’re a full-blooded Trekkie or just want an exciting costume for Halloween, there are so many costumes that allow you to “bravely go where no man has gone before,” so buckle up!

Standard Halloween Costumes

The original Starfleet is the navy of the United Federation of Planets, where all research, exploration, diplomacy and defense efforts are carried out. If you want to dress like someone from Starfleet, keep the following guidelines in mind:

  1. Command and helm officers. The highest officers in Starfleet are those who are experts in leadership and tactical training. They organize their crews and direct missions. Although technically green, the uniforms of the commanding officers and helmsman appear gold.
  2. Medical and scientific staff. Those who worked in the science and medicine divisions wore blue uniforms.
  3. The Redshirts. The red shirt became popular when several members of the Starfleet navy’s security and engineering personnel were suddenly met with violent deaths as soon as a mission got underway.

It’s easy to get a gold (or amber), blue, or red shirt. Now is the time to customize it to be truly Star Trek. Some naturally artistic and creative guys will create the Star Trek badge themselves and stick it to their shirt. Others who don’t have much of a creative eye can get by with a ragged badge or will have to wear the officially licensed Star Trek Halloween costumes. Yes, these come with the badge and will definitely look more realistic than homemade costumes.

Decide your character

Now that that’s out of the way, it’s time to decide the character you want to dress up as so that you can customize your appearance and make your costume more specific. Here are the main characters of the movie.

  1. Captain James T. Kirk. The youngest captain in Starfleet, he is also one of the most ambitious and motivated leaders, pushing himself and his crew beyond human limits to achieve the impossible. This main main character wears a golden robe and dark pants.
  2. Spock – Half human and half Vulcan, Spock constantly explores how he can evolve responsibly. He is a science officer and therefore wears a blue robe that is slightly darker in the 2009 movie than it is in the series. Spock sports a flat bowl cut hairstyle, but you can get a wig if you don’t want to rock this nerdy look forever. Shave your brows too, for the distinctive upward look that only Spock can have.
  3. Nyota uhura Although she never meets a violent death during TV and movie series, it seemed fitting that this fierce femme fatale donned a fiery red tunic dress and black boots.
  4. Hikaru sulu – This Japanese-Filipino lieutenant represents the entire Asian continent and is seen for the first time in a blue physique uniform, although in later episodes and in the Star Trek movie, he wears a golden robe just like Kirk’s.
  5. Leonard “Bones” McCoy – The passionate, almost aggressive, McCoy is Kirk’s best friend, confidant, counselor, priest and personal bartender. He is a doctor who believes in the healing abilities inherent in man.
  6. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott – Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott is seen as the one who connects Kirk’s ambitious plans and what is technically feasible for the spacecraft. He is seen in a red robe and dark pants.
  7. Pavel Chekov – In the latest Star Trek movie, Pavel Chekov is most famous for his comic quirks, such as the tendency to replace his v’s with w’s and vice versa. He is a child prodigy whose outstanding math skills have elevated him to the rank of command. Pavel Chekov wears a gold robe and black pants.
