Tarpon Springs is one of my first choices for a Florida vacation. Tourism has replaced sponges as a source of major economic activity. Thousands of visitors each year come to the city to enjoy the outdoors, visit the sponge docks, see professional divers in action, and experience the Greek culture that still pervades the city. Visitors come to walk the boulevard and visit its unique Greek shops, buy sponges and feast at the restaurants serving traditional Greek food and delicious cakes. Many of the shops are owned and operated by the descendants of the first Greek immigrants to come to the city. Tarpon Springs’ economy is estimated to help nurture a $20 million a year tourism industry along with the city’s thriving arts and antiques community.

Tarpon Springs is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, and is known for having the highest percentage of Greek-Americans of any city in the United States. Tarpon Springs received its name in the late 1800s from visitors who noticed spotted tarpon leaping from the Gulf of Mexico. The first Greek immigrants came to Tarpon Springs around 1880 hoping to prosper as sponge divers. In 1900 sponge collecting became a multi-million dollar business until sponges became extinct in the mid 1900s due to a red tide. Tarpon Springs is known for its beachfront properties overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and its many wetlands. This combined with the nearby beaches at Tarpon Springs provide plenty of opportunities for swimming, boating, and many other water sports. Tarpon Springs’ Sponge Dock District is the area’s biggest tourist attraction, as well as being a historic destination. There are a large number of shops and boutiques selling real sponges along with other imported products.

Destin, Florida is known as one of the most fertile fishing grounds in creation. Every year, tourists and anglers flock to Destin to take advantage of the region’s abundance of fish. But Destin is also one of the best places to dive in the world. With many underwater sights to explore, snorkeling is one of the most impressive activities for any tourist. Visitors can be sure that they will find some of the most beautiful treasures in the world. Tropical fish, natural reefs and a whole range of marine life. You can also see loggerhead turtles and rays. While some people worry about sharks, Destin’s snorkeling excursions stay out of areas where sharks or other dangerous fish might be present, ensuring a safe and fun experience. Snorkeling trips last around three to four hours, depending on how many activities are included in the trip package. The charter guide will usually give you a double summary of what the day will be like, complete with instructions on safety and use. Charters will rent any equipment you may need.

Nearly every year, millions of small minnows migrate from north to south in the Atlantic near coastal waters beginning in late August and gradually declining by late October. The great black clouds of bait are crushed by tarpon, sharks, snook, bluefish, trevally, mackerel and anything else that wants to join the fray. Even anglers who aren’t very handy with a cast net can catch enough bait to last a day with one or two casts, then turn these live baits into double-digit fish catches.

Kissimmee is ready and waiting to take you to the big ones. Catch some of Florida’s amazing trophy bass or head to the space coast for some of the best saltwater fishing or go turtle hunting. Canaveral National Seashore, near Titusville, is a virtual turtle hatchery, with hundreds of sea turtles making the journey to lay their eggs on the warm sands along the Atlantic. Whether you want to glide across the water at a leisurely pace, in search of Florida’s exotic birds, turtles and alligators, or soar like the wind into the swamps at speeds up to 45 miles per hour.

Okeechobee is teeming with fish once again and the water is good after years of crippling catastrophes. The lagoon itself is known as the world’s top bass fishing spot. About 6 million people are said to be drawn to the Okeechobee Reservoir, plus its proximity to Orlando and that city’s 52 million annual visitors provide more capacity for business.

If your favorite way to fish is using artificials, try frogs, horney toads, flying tarpon, spinner baits, jumbo worms and your favorite flip/cast bait. Colors to monopolize are June Bug, Black/Blue, Calla Squash, Watermelon/Red, and Plum. Let me warn you, the folks on the lake are very conservation conscious, which suggests keeping only trophy bass or whatever you’re going to eat, and releasing the rest. With this in mind, don’t keep fish over three pounds to eat. Your guide will clean your limit of fish for you to take home or take to your favorite restaurant.
