Creating a pub quiz needs a lot of thought. Difficulty level, topics, and number of quiz rounds are important parts of a quiz.

1. standard format. The standard format of a pub quiz is a set number of rounds, usually 4 or 5, often containing a round of booklets. A set of general knowledge quizzes is usually the focus of the quiz with at least 50% of the quiz having various trivia questions. To set one up, you first need to choose the number of rounds you want (usually around 5). Then write or shop for 2 or 3 of the sets of dozens of questions. Now select what type of booklet round you want. The most common is a picture quiz, but taglines, anagrams, and little storyboards are becoming very popular.
2. Thematic Format. Similar to the standard pub quiz, but with the focus of general knowledge questions on the important date or event. Common themes are based on Christmas, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day. Usually the flyer round is a picture with whoever or whatever dressed up in clothing that relates to the theme, like celebrities with a Santa beard.
3. round table format. The roundtable format is much more relaxed with the tests distributed as handout rounds. They are a selection of quizzes, such as rounds of brochures, anagrams and slogans. They can be handed out or you can leave one on the table and include them as one of the rounds of a normal pub quiz. First deliver them, then mark them and deliver a new one. Round table quizzes are a great option for a couple of times a week and you can do them for free with no prizes just leave them on the actual table or you can do them with prizes and entry fee. These are becoming popular again and are perfect if you don’t have a competent test master.
4. Storyboard Format. Storyboards are relatively old, but new when it comes to pub quizzes. You may remember doing this in school with a passage and then having to fill in the blanks from a pre-selected list or from your own general knowledge. A storyboard pub quiz might just be delivery rounds, but it’s more fun to have them read by a quiz master and the answers are given at the beginning. You have to have firm rules that everyone understands before starting this type of quiz; otherwise you will spend years repeating what you lose. Read slowly, pausing carefully to allow people to think before moving on to the next part of the passage.
5. cryptic format. Cryptic formats are becoming more popular again. This is where the mystery in the clues to link to the answer. Quiz rounds are usually 4 or 5 questions as they take longer to answer and sometimes a prize is awarded to first responder but it gets a bit messy and time consuming.
