Install a fridge in your caravan or motorhome

Why have an approved facility?

Avoid

  • Poor refrigerator performance
  • Cold drafts entering the living space
  • Rain through the winds
  • shooting problems

THE BREAK:

  1. The refrigerator must stand on its feet (including the bottom hinge) and be firmly secured in a sturdy casing.
  2. Removal for maintenance should be easy.
  3. Leave a minimum space of 10 to 20 mm behind the refrigerator.
  4. The refrigerator door must be able to open a minimum of 105° without obstruction to allow removal of interior accessories.

VENTILATION – ESSENTIAL FOR THE GOOD PERFORMANCE OF THE REFRIGERATOR

  1. For the refrigerator to function properly, each vent must have an effective free area of at least 240 cm². For models that exceed 60 liters in capacity, the effective free area must be at least 300 cm². The Dometic (formerly Electrolux) ventilation system type LS100, LS200 more than adequately meets this requirement. Position the top vent in relation to the rear of the refrigerator so that the top edge of the vent is at least 55mm above the top of the refrigerator.
  2. Dometic (formerly Electrolux) recommends the use of their LS100 LS200 ventilation system as this is the only system tested with their range of caravan/motorhome refrigerators. With other systems, water can enter through the vents and saturate the area behind the refrigerator.
  3. A gas exhaust hole of 13 cm² area must be provided under the refrigerator (not under the burner) so that unburned LP-Gas can escape. If it is located in a cabinet under the refrigerator, a label must be provided warning the user not to obstruct the ventilation.
  4. The refrigeration unit should be isolated from the interior of the caravan or motorhome at the rear of the refrigerator for optimal performance and to prevent cold drafts from entering the living space. Failure to meet this Criterion will allow warm air to collect around the refrigerator, heat will re-enter the refrigerator through the insulation, and performance will be affected.
  5. The caravan/motorhome door (when fully open) must not obstruct the cooling unit vents or smoke outlet; Otherwise, the performance of the refrigerator may be affected, especially in high ambient temperatures, and the combustion gases may disperse slowly. The average distance between the vents and the door must be greater than 25 mm.

THE FLU:

  1. Only Dometic (formerly Electrolux) approved flue kit should be used.
  2. The top of the chimney must be secured with the screw provided to avoid the risk of restriction.
  3. Leave a 5mm gap between the flue and combustible material on the caravan/motorhome wall to avoid the risk of fire.
  4. Provide a minimum gap of 10mm between the end of the flue and the top of the flue to prevent distortion of the flue cover.
  5. Fit the perforated flue cover to keep out dirt and moisture and to prevent the flame from accidentally going out.
  6. Make sure that the gap between the chimney cap and the inside surface of the chimney cover always exceeds 5mm to avoid the risk of restriction.
  7. In non-integrated flue system, the sealant should only be applied between the outer shell of the flue and the flange plate of the flue pipe on the top and side only. It must not be applied behind the flue pipe flange plate.

LP-GAS CONNECTION

  1. The supply pipe must be copper to prevent gas leaks and must be connected to the refrigerator inlet pipe using a suitable threaded coupling.
  2. An approved union gas cock must be incorporated into the supply line at a point accessible to the user to allow the refrigerator to be isolated.

ELECTRIC CONNECTIONS

Make sure that the wires do not touch the flue or hot parts of the refrigeration unit.

240 VOLT SUPPLY

  1. It must be through a fused and properly grounded 3 amp plug and socket or through a 5 amp contact breaker.

12 VOLT SUPPLY

  1. To avoid voltage drops, the cross-sectional area of the connecting cable between the battery/alternator and the refrigerator must be at least:
    • 2.0mm². Maximum stroke 8.0 meters
    • 2.5mm². Maximum stroke 10.5 meters
    • 4.0mm². Maximum stroke 17.0 meters
  2. A 15 amp fuse must be installed in the positive conductor to protect the cable in the event of a fault.

12 VOLT SUPPLY FOR RE-IGNITION

  1. Observe correct polarity.
  2. The cross-sectional area of the power cable must be at least 0.5 mm².
  3. A 1.0 amp fuse must be incorporated in the power cable adjacent to the battery to protect the wiring.

Suggestion for use– The cold air from the refrigerator is heavier than the ambient air and falls out when the door is opened. So don’t leave the door open more than necessary.
