Most crib mattresses made today are of mediocre quality. If not, the comfort and support it provides is not enough. Babies need the best quality of sleep as this is the time it takes for their bodies to develop.

You can make your own mattress if you can’t find the right one in stores. It’s pretty simple as long as you know a bit about sewing and have the materials with you. Here is a guide for you.

Step 1 – If you have already purchased a crib, use your mattress as a guide. Get manila paper and then use the mattress as a guide. Lay it out on the manila paper, and then use a pencil to trace its outlines. If you just bought the crib without a mattress, just measure the sides of the crib and use a ruler to draw a pattern of those measurements.

Step 2: Get another pattern paper, and then put the first paper on it. This time, make a pattern but leave a half inch of margin on all sides. This will serve as your guide on where to sew.

Step 3 – Now get the foam you want to incorporate into the DIY crib mattress you are making. Place the first pattern on the foam. Use pins to secure the pattern to the foam. Get a sharp electric knife or any sharp knife to cut through the foam. Trace the edges carefully. When you’re done, remove the pins and trace pattern.

Step 4 – Choose a nice and attractive fabric as the cover. If the fabric is too thick and two large, cut it into two equal parts. Lay the second pattern on top of the other fabric, then secure the edges with pins. Do the same with the other half of the fabric. Cut the edges of the fabric exactly the same size as the pattern.

Step 5: Now you can see the mattress. Do you remember the half inch allowance you allocated? You should sew it together with the other part of the fabric. On one side of the fabric, sew a zipper.

Step 6: Once this is done, you can now put the foam inside. Close the cover and then place the mattress in the crib.

It’s like making pillows. You just have to be precise when measuring the mattress so that you can make the correct mattress size for your baby.
