Granite or engineered quartz: which stone countertop will provide better style, beauty and longevity?

There is an ongoing debate regarding which countertop material is best; engineered quartz or granite. The truth of the matter is that both materials are virtually equal in durability. A statement like this is justified by the fact that granite is a natural mixture of elements, including quartz. However, there are clear differences that will definitely sway some homeowners from one countertop material to another.

The first big key difference between granite and quartz countertops, which is the most noticeable, is the color variations and unique patterns that granite possesses. Being a 100% natural stone, no two granite slabs share the exact same pattern. Similar veins, textures, and color shadings can be achieved, but the slabs will need to be from the same quarry and the same general area within that particular quarry.

With engineered quartz countertops, a consistent color and pattern is easily achieved. An advantage of quartz countertops because engineered quartz countertops are processed with resins and pigments, an almost unlimited color selection is possible. The home owner should be aware of the limitations of using an engineered quartz countertop on an outdoor patio or grill area. Quartz countertops can be susceptible to the damaging effects of ultraviolet light which can very well alter the original color or finish of the countertop.

Unlike quartz surfaces, manufacturers often recommend sealing granite to minimize the damaging effects of spills and condensation. Some professionals claim that due to the denser nature of granite, caulking is not necessary. The best advice is to follow the supplier’s specific instructions to ensure that your granite countertop maintains its beauty and finish for a lifetime.

However, there are similarities between the two types of materials. Both granite and quartz are exceptionally hard and will withstand normal daily abuse. However, acidic liquid spills, such as lemon juice or wine, must be wiped up immediately to prevent detrimental effects on the finish of each countertop. The finish of each can also be adversely affected by placing a hot sauce pan or other cooking container directly on the countertop surface. For this reason, manufacturers always recommend that a trivet or pot holder be used to place the pan.

Whether granite or engineered quartz is chosen for a countertop material, either stone will make a beautiful enhancement to any home’s décor. The costs of both can be similar or vary widely from each other, as quartz sometimes costs more than granite. The homeowner will need to weigh the options and try to imagine what surface area would complement the kitchen or bathroom remodel.
