Fall Break Ideas for Students

Autumn holidays are approaching for most university students across Europe. It’s the perfect time to enjoy a cheap student holiday with some of your best friends and get carried away somewhere abroad, enjoying all it has to offer in terms of sights, attractions and nightlife.

Stuck for ideas of where to go?

Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn is best discovered on foot, so you can save precious pennies on public transport to spend at one of the city’s many trendy cafes or designer shops, including Leib, Sfaar and F-Hoone.

For brunches, exhibitions and flea markets, there’s no better place to go than Telliskivi Loomelinnak, a rejuvenated factory complex a short drive from the city centre.

Another pleasant walk takes visitors to the Presidential Palace, its surrounding parks, and the impressive KUMU museum of modern art that is built into the side of a hill. On the way back, stop at the beach to admire the magnificent panorama of the old town.

The city has a mixed Baltic and Scandinavian feel to it that is truly unique.

Hostels can cost less than €10 a night if booked in advance, and the local CouchSurfing community is quite active.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Slovenian capital is a true Balkan jewel. Nestled in a deep green valley, the town boasts beautiful views best enjoyed from the terrace of the town’s imposing hilltop castle.

Hop on a Bicikelj (Ljubljana’s answer to the Velibs in Paris and Boris Bikes in London) and discover the city by bike, stopping for cheap picnic items at the local market best enjoyed lying on the Tivoli Park’s lush gardens (as long as it’s still warm enough).

In the evening, see what’s on the agenda in Ljubljana’s cultural quarter, Metelkova. Regular free concerts tend to take place Thursday through Saturday, as well as super hip club nights. There is also a modern hostel on site.

The banks of the Ljubljanica river are lined with trendy bars, many of which have happy hours in the evenings, so you’re guaranteed a good night out. Luckily, there are several hostels and hotels nearby so you don’t have to walk far home at the end of the night.

London, United Kingdom

Contrary to what the crowds will tell you, it is possible to visit the British capital on the cheap. Avoid major tourist attractions that charge a fortune, like Madame Tussaud’s and the London Eye, and take free walking tours, stopping at free attractions like Tate Modern, Museum of London, Borough Market, Brick Lane, and Covent Garden.

If you’re looking for cheap food, head to China Town, where a few restaurants specialize in all-you-can-eat buffets for £5.

Hostels in areas such as Camden Town and Queensway are within easy walking distance of many places of interest and have a variety of lively bars and cheap restaurants. If booked last minute through a special deals website, a Tower of London hotel can also be affordable and well worth the experience.
