Do you know where your penis is?

Spatial Orientation, in the human being, has to do with the body’s ability to determine where it or any part of the body is in its environment; especially in relation to the rest of the body and its complete solidarity in this environment. The question remains, how does the body know where the penis is in this landscape?

Most people believe that there are only six main senses in the body: touch, taste, hearing, vision, balance, and smell. This is completely wrong. There are many more senses that the body has that allow it to function in its environment. For example: Vibration, Two Point Discrimination, Temperature, etc.

One of the sensory factors in humans is Spatial Orientation. This allows a person to determine his existence (positioning) in his environment. This is accomplished primarily through receptors in the joints, muscles, and tendons that send impulses to the brain that allow a person to perceive their physical presence in an environment. This lets you know where you are in three-dimensional space. For example, the police use a form of spatial orientation to decide if one is drunk or not. It is a simple test. With your eyes closed, touch your nose with your finger. Most people who are drunk are unable to perform this operation, as the alcohol in their system has hampered their proprioception abilities.

Proprioception is a method in which the body determines its spatial orientation. Signals are sent from the muscles, tendons and joints to the brain and this helps the body determine where a certain part of the body is at any given location at any given time. For example, this mechanism allows people to walk. It helps to decide where the lower extremities are located during the process of walking. Then decide which muscles to contract and which muscles to relax; and coordinating this completely so that one person can walk instead of being confused with the engine and falling over.

Now, how does the body determine where the penis is in its three-dimensional space? If there are no joints in the penis, very few muscles, and only a handful of ligaments, then how do you feel where your penis is at any given moment?

During the flaccid state, very little sensory information is sent to the brain to allow the brain to deal with penile function. This is a way that your penis does not tell you at all times during the day where it is and what it is doing, as long as it is in a flaccid state. The reticular formation also has something to do with this, as the reticular formation helps the body to ignore incoming data that is not relevant at the moment.

But when a man creates an erection, it is very aware of his penis and its position in three-dimensional space. This is due to the mechanoreceptors in the penis. They send information to the brain about stretching and distortion, allowing the brain to determine its location in its environment. This is done primarily through the penile skin sending information (via these sensory mechanoreceptors) about vibration, pressure, stretch, and touch.

So if a man is standing naked with a boner, we can theorize three main inputs that allow this man to realize that his penis is erect and taking up space. That would be via stretch mechanoreceptors, ligament tension via proprioceptors, and proprioception via affected and surrounding tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints.

It’s a great system. Without it, a man would not know if his penis exists or not.
