Back to school at age 50 or older?

“Is it worth spending money on learning if you are 50 or 60 years old?”

The answer to that is most emphatically resounding, “YES!”

Sometimes one of the hardest things for us once we get to this age and gain a lot of life experience along the way is to just humble ourselves. So is, humble ourselves and admit that even if we have 5 college degrees in Marketing and 25 years of experience with a traditional marketing company, we don’t know much when it comes to the finer points of online marketing. It really is a whole other world and while your titles, which didn’t stop you from being fired or having your bonuses reduced, will help you in some of the basic ways, the nuts and bolts of successful online marketing will elude you entirely if you don’t get the facts. what do you need.

Not only has it been proven time and time again that exercising our minds can keep us more alert as the years go by, but we also need to keep up. Without a doubt, the Internet has pushed us all to another way of learning. It is, in fact, the fastest way to search for topics that interest us personally, we can be taken from one topic to another without stopping only to tell ourselves that maybe it’s time to stop for the day.

The Internet has also expanded the potential for learning in other ways. There was a time when “going back to school” meant going to your local college, signing up for classes, and sitting in a physical classroom with other people eager to learn something new.

Those of us who are in our 50s or 60s right now are the generation that grew up without computers in our childhood. It’s true… believe it or not! The closest I came to a “computer” were the first calculators that went beyond the basics. I often thought that my fingers were much faster when doing math.

There was never anything that really prepared those of us in this age group for what was to come. For some of us, there were several years of adulthood before we bought a computer for our homes. My experience with anything remotely “computer-like” was learning how to use a word processor a long time ago. Even my two daughters, now that I think about it, managed to graduate from high school without ever having access to the internet in our house. In fact, I was still using my IBM Selectric to write.

Despite my love of “computer stuff”, there are still days when I find myself wishing it would go away. I know, I know, it’s called “Turn it off!”. On the other hand, there is always one more item of interest that I can look up just for the fun of learning about it. The world of knowledge on the Internet is unlimited, and I often joke: “Who would?” when I come across some interesting fact, image or story of a place that I will never visit or see in my life. There it is and my horizon has expanded once again.

There is no doubt that the Internet has profoundly affected where and how we learn. However, everything we learn is valuable and there are times when it is not only a good idea, but the best part of wisdom, to shell out some money to help us focus on learning to achieve our goals.

As I made my way through my 10 years of being a widow, I learned to drive a big truck at the age of 50 just because I wanted to. As he drove, he often commented that it was the only job he’d ever had where it didn’t matter if you were male or female, how old you were or what you’d been before. The truck, in other words, didn’t care. Either you knew how to drive it or you didn’t.

Internet is the same as driving that truck. The computer has no idea who is requesting the information and doesn’t care if you are younger, older, what gender you are, or if you haven’t slept in Sheboygan, WI. Therefore, gaining the knowledge of how to make better use of this wonderful aspect of our lives is the smartest decision anyone can make if they want to expand their web presence.

Despite what it may seem, it is possible to stumble and “learn along the way”. But, if you really want to achieve success, whether it’s with an online business or just generating interest on a personal or charity website, there comes a time when we need to go back to school.

This means looking at the options available and finding the education that best focuses on the goal you want to achieve. It’s also time to “put your money where your mouth is” because sooner or later you’ll discover that trying to do everything for free just isn’t enough.

Save yourself time and agony by committing to focused training from the start, or stop doing what obviously doesn’t work and get a solid, proven learning program.

The main reason why you should shell out some money to learn? Because losing focus on the internet, flipping through all those emails you get about learning how to make money in your sleep (free of course, which it never really is), or listening to every guru that comes along will get you exactly nowhere. The basics, the foundations of any success on the net require the same learning that you would need to get a job in marketing, for example, offline. It’s simply about gaining specific knowledge about a subject that will help you succeed in the world it was designed for.
