Used Campers – The Pop Up

I was looking for used motorhomes online earlier this year and started to feel overwhelmed by the options. Used caravans come in all sizes and many serve different purposes. It has tear, travel, popup, fifth wheel, etc. For my family, a used pop-up RV was our best option and here are a few reasons why.

First of all, a great benefit of buying a used caravan is the price. Specifically, a used pop up camper will be your most cost effective option and you can get the most return on your investment. I went to several dealers that specialize in new and used RVs and was shocked at the price difference. I was looking for a pop up window with air conditioner, refrigerator, water heater, water pump, toilet and shower. New, I was looking for a minimum of $9,000 for the baseline. With a little shock from the stickers, I spent the next few afternoons on Craigslist. Within 5 days I found a mint condition 1998 Coleman that was kept in a garage and had everything I wanted but was more than half the price I found at the dealership.

The popup is also very lightweight and can be easily towed by most trucks, vans, and SUVs. I towed my Coleman with a 2007 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado and didn’t notice a huge difference in gas mileage. I average 17 miles per gallon loaded, 19 unloaded.

In addition to cost, size, and features, the pop-up camper is ideal for a family of four. The family sleeps comfortably in the two fold outs. I personally have two little girls and they love the space they have next to them. Personally, the only recommendation I have is to buy some egg crate foam for the adults sleeping in the RV. Most used campers come with the standard camper mattress. This can become uncomfortable as the night goes on, especially if you weigh more than 180 pounds.

In addition to spacious sleeping folds, most pop-up campers have a small dinette, a three-way refrigerator, storage areas under the seating benches, and a cooking area. It’s a big plus if you can find a used RV that has a full kitchen area that has a sink with hot water, a four-burner stove, and ample storage space. Again, if you’re looking for used motorhomes to save some money, you’d benefit greatly from buying one with a cassette toilet and shower. First of all, both are useful in an emergency, if the place you are camping does not offer facilities or if the facilities are unpleasant. Second, used RVs hold their resale value better than RVs that don’t have extra features.

The last great feature of the popup is its ease of configuration. Pop-ups are easy to set up and most can be brought fully packed to bedtime in 15 to 20 minutes.

Most used caravans have a lot of life in them, so if you’re in the market, take a look at the pop up caravan.
