The history of the invention of radio

The invention of the radio happened after the discoveries of the telegraph and the telephone. This trio of technologies is interrelated. Radio began as wireless telegraphy. In fact, it all started with the great discovery of radio waves. These waves can transmit music, voice and images through the air. In addition, many devices, such as cordless phones, microwave radios and televisions, work through electromagnetic waves.

In 1860, the Scottish physicist James Maxwell predicted radio waves. In 1886, another expert, Heinrich Hertz, demonstrated the projection of the variation of electric current in the form of powerful radio waves.

After the invention of the telephone, experts discovered that music can be transmitted over telephone lines. An expert named Guglielmo Marconi discovered how to use radio signals. He was an Italian discoverer who showed the feasibility of radio communication. Actually, he was fascinated by Hertz’s discovery of radio waves. He realized that radio waves could send and receive telegraphic messages. He referred to them as powerful wireless telegraphs.

In 1896, its scrambled signals were broadcast just a mile away. Then Marconi recognized the potential of it and made an offer to the Government of Italy, but it was rejected. After moving to England, he took out a patent and did an experiment. In 1898, Marconi showed the results of the Kingstown Regatta to the Dublin newspaper office. It was the first public broadcast of this great sporting event. Soon he started his radio factory and established a link between Britain and France. In 1901, he too established a link with America. He also got the Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention in 1909.

The problem was that the wireless telegraph only transmitted signals. Voice transmission through this technology began in 1921. In 1922, Marconi gave us the news of shortwave transmissions. However, he was not the only inventor of the radio. In fact, Nikola Tesla, another great personality, who moved to the US in 1884, introduced the theoretical model of radio before Marconi.

Another pretender to the throne of this technology is JC Bose. In 1896, he made a radio broadcast demonstration to the British Governor-General in Calcutta. Interestingly, the transmission occurred at a distance of about 6 kilometers. In fact, his instrument was connected to the telephone detector.

In fact, Bose addressed the problem of penetration through water, walls, or mountains. Actually, the Marconi Cohere is considered the same as the Bose Coherer. At first, Bose was a bit hesitant to apply for a patent, as he believed in freedom of invention in science. However, he applied for one when some of his friends persuaded him to do so in 1901. He got the patent in 1904.

At last, radio transmitters got much better. Global radiotelegraph services developed since early transmitters allowed electricity to be discharged between the electrodes and into the circuit causing too much interference. These problems were solved by De Forest and Alexanderson.
