How to end a business relationship amicably

Sometimes it becomes necessary to end a business relationship. It doesn’t necessarily mean that something is wrong with the person as a human being, but it can mean that the two of you have outgrown each other.

Reasons for ending a relationship with a client

1. They make unreasonable demands

Remember that what is unreasonable to you is reasonable to them, so it is best not to confront them about this behavior, but try to set limits. If you’re trying to set limits and they won’t let you, it may be time to end the relationship because you’re not a good fit.

2. They keep trying to get you to lower your rates

Anyone who agrees to a fee and then keeps trying to talk you out of it has no respect for your business. They may even think of you as an employee or a liability rather than a partner in their business. If the topic of payment comes up a lot, it might be a good idea to move on.

3. They are slow payers

Any customer who consistently fails to pay on time is a liability to your business and your cash flow. If you have an agreement to be paid in a certain way, you should get paid. Give your client a warning and set three strikes and you are out of the rule.

4. They don’t listen

When a client hires you as an expert in your niche, but doesn’t listen to anything you have to contribute, but still wants you to be responsible for ROI, you have a serious problem that needs to be fixed. If you can’t fix it, let them go.

5. They don’t respond

If you ask for information and they never give it to you or they are often late with the information and it affects how you perform your duties, it may be best to let the customer go. Their lack of response can mess up your schedule and affect not only the work you do for them but also the work you do for others.

6. They are disrespectful

When you feel like someone is disrespecting you, ask them if they are saying what you think they are saying so they can clarify for you. If they’re being disrespectful, it’s time to part ways.

The best ways to end the customer relationship

1. Look at your contract

Review the contract to see what the rules and methods are for ending the relationship and stick to that.

2. Keep it business related

Although sometimes ending a relationship with a client feels personal, it’s best if it doesn’t get personal but stays in business.

3. Give notice

In most cases, it is best to give notice according to the contract. Usually this is a one month notice. But, if the relationship is contentious, you can try to end it earlier.

4.Money refund

If you’re working on a retainer, be sure to pay back any money you haven’t earned yet. Even if your contract says you won’t offer refunds, it’s best to do so, as you’ll walk away with a higher grade.
