Eventually we will all be older adults – Think about it

Very often we hear stories about the forgotten old man. Perhaps they did not have children, or perhaps a tragedy occurred and they survived their children, perhaps they are the surviving spouses with no one else. Those are terrible cases to consider.

Still, let me explain one that can be even worse. Perhaps there has been an unfortunate separation in the family and your children and grandchildren do not call or come to visit. Whatever the case, it’s sad to see. Most of us feel sad when we read stories like this. Yes, there are always two sides in the corner. Perhaps a parent or grandparent has deliberately distanced themselves over the years, and perhaps part of the blame lies there as well.

Okay, we accept that there may be family issues, but our seniors are still family! Too often we forget about all the nurturing years our parents gave us. I was listening to someone the other day tell me a story about a friend’s family and emotional pain that had occurred over many decades, and it reminded me of a video I watched. Perhaps if family members had seen this video, they could have reflected their positions and dismissed past animosity.

What I want to say is that life is too short, don’t let it pass you by because one day it will be too late to say you’re sorry.

There’s a great YouTube video I watched, I’d like you to take a moment out of your day and watch it now, you’ll be glad you did. The video is titled; “An aging mother writes this letter to her daughter” and I recommend you go to YouTube and look it up and watch it. I sincerely hope you think about that and how important family is.

Remember that we will all be old and elderly one day, it will be difficult for us to move and take care of ourselves. We will need help and assistance. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all think about this right now and give it back a bit? That’s the least we can do: provide assistance, respect and dignity to the elderly and give them back a little humanity in the process. Why not think about this now, start today, and commit to helping an elderly family member, close relative, or neighbor? Live, love and enjoy your time here on Earth.
