Choosing a diet – Atkins diet: the medical community is less skeptical

The American Journal of Medicine report says …

The Atkins diet can help your heart after all and it has been given some SCIENTIFIC, THUMBS UP! The medical community is less skeptical of the Atkins diet, which promotes large amounts of protein and fat in the diet; saying people can lose weight double fast based on a 6 month study on a low carb / high fat diet as a dieter on a low fat / calorie restricted diet. However, it is believed that people will regain weight faster once they have stopped the Atkins diet.

Regardless of the type of diet you choose, making a weight loss and maintenance program a lifestyle change it will reduce weight fluctuations.

  • Incorporate portion control into the equation, exercise 3-4 times a week for (approximately 20-30 minutes per session).

  • Whether you are following a low fat / calorie restricted, Mediterranean, low cholesterol or low carbohydrate diet like the Atkin diet; or any other diet, such as getting up and moving (exercise), reducing the portions you eat (reducing calories), and overall healthier eating habits is a recipe for success. What kinds of diets have you been following? I’ve heard of many over the years:

  • The grapefruit diet
  • Chocolate diet
  • Ice cream diet
  • Liquid diet
  • 3 day diet
  • Protein diet
  • Cottage cheese diet

Oh my! In my opinion, it is always better to eat regular foods, but reduce your portion sizes. This cuts calories and before you know it, you’ve lost weight too. It may be slower than a crash diet, or one of the fad diets, but in the long run, the weight needs to be maintained longer.

Eating what you normally eat, but less, will also prevent you from overeating. Don’t run out of the foods you love, as mentioned, decrease the portion size. Eat a cup of pasta instead of 2-3. Increase the amount of vegetables you eat, place on a plate 2 to 3 different vegetables and no more than 3 oz. of cooked meat. Lighten the breads.

These are all tips to help balance the weight!
